Instant Kollu (Horse Gram) Rasam

Ingredients

🥣 Rasam Grind

  • 1 tbsp horse gram (dry roasted)

  • ½ tbsp coriander seeds

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 sprig curry leaves

  • 1 big tomato

  • 6 garlic cloves

  • ¼ tsp fenugreek seeds

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • ¼ tsp carom seeds (ajwain)

🥄 Rasam

  • 1 cup tamarind water

  • Salt – as required

  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder

  • 1½ cups water

  • A few coriander leaves (for garnish)

🔥 To Splutter (Tempering)

  • 1 tbsp ghee

  • ½ tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 dry red chili

  • 1 sprig curry leaves


Instructions

  1. 🌰 Dry Roast Horse Gram

    • Roast horse gram in a pan until aromatic.

  2. 🌿 Add Spices

    • Add black pepper, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, carom seeds, and fenugreek seeds.

    • Sauté for 30 seconds.

  3. 🧄 Add Garlic & Curry Leaves

    • Mix in garlic and curry leaves, sauté lightly, then turn off the stove.

  4. 🔄 Coarse Grind

    • Grind the mixture coarsely.

    • Add the tomato and grind again coarsely.

  5. 🍳 Prepare Tempering

    • Heat ghee in a pan.

    • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

    • Add dry red chili and curry leaves, roast lightly.

  6. 🥘 Cook Rasam

    • Add the coarse grind mixture to the pan, sauté briefly.

    • Add salt, turmeric powder, water, coriander leaves, and tamarind water.

    • Bring to a frothy boil.

  7. 🌿 Garnish & Serve

    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

    • Serve hot with steamed rice or enjoy as a spicy soup!
